SEO In The Age Of AI: How To Rank When No One Clicks
24th September 2026
Around two thirds of Google searches now end without a click through to any website. That number has been climbing for a decade, through knowledge panels, map results, weather boxes and featured snippets. AI Overviews have accelerated it sharply over the past eighteen months.
For anyone paying for SEO, this creates an awkward situation. The work can be going well, the rankings can be improving, and the traffic graph can still point downwards. Reports built around sessions have started telling the wrong story, and plenty of business owners have concluded their agency has gone off the boil when the real issue is that a ranking is worth fewer visitors than it used to be.
The Numbers Behind Zero-Click Search
Rand Fishkin’s SparkToro, working with Similarweb panel data, produced the clearest recent measurement. Their analysis of US Google searches from January to April 2026 found:
- 68% of searches ended without a click to any website
- That figure was around 60% in 2024 and 49% in 2019
- Searches made inside Google’s mobile app were excluded, and the behaviour there is reportedly worse
The trend started long before AI answers arrived. Knowledge panels, weather boxes, calculators, maps and featured snippets have been absorbing clicks for a decade. AI Overviews sped up something already moving.
Coverage of the study points to Google nudging people to refine and continue searching rather than leave. A search that leads to another search never reaches your website.
How often AI answers actually appear depends on whose measurement you read:
- Ahrefs trigger data, cited in the SparkToro study, puts AI Overviews on more than 20% of Google searches, cutting click-through rate by roughly 60% when one shows
- BrightEdge, tracking a different query set, reported closer to 48% in February 2026
- Semrush has published lower figures again

Your Rankings Did Not Break
Rankings collapsing is a technical or content problem. Rankings holding while clicks fall is neither, and no amount of on-page work will bring that traffic back. It went to an answer instead of to a competitor.
We see the same wrong move regularly. Sessions drop, so more content gets commissioned, usually more of the general informational posts that were already losing clicks. Budget goes out, traffic keeps sliding, and confidence in search takes another knock.
Start with diagnosis instead:
- Segment your Search Console data by query type
- Look at where the clicks went, not just how many were lost
- Compare informational queries against commercial ones, since they have behaved very differently this year
Which Searches Still Send Clicks
That 68% is an average across everything Google handles, including trivia, weather checks, and unit conversions that were never going to become customers. We break the split down further in the different types of search in an AI driven world.
Three categories still perform.
- Local searches: Someone looking for a service nearby still has to choose a business, get directions, and make contact. AI summaries show up less often here, and map results keep driving calls and visits. For most service businesses, this is the most valuable ground to defend. Worth reading alongside Google Maps’ biggest AI update yet.
- Transactional and commercial queries: Buying intent, pricing comparisons, product specifics, and supplier shortlists all still send clicks. The decision belongs to a person, and a summary cannot make it for them.
- Brand searches: Someone reads your name inside an AI answer, does nothing at the time, then searches for you directly days later. Similarweb makes this point in its zero-click analysis, and it matches what we see in client accounts, where General branded search volume climbs before enquiries do.
Broad informational content built to pull in top-of-funnel traffic has taken the heaviest damage. If that was the backbone of your strategy, it needs rebuilding around commercial value.
How To Rank When The Answer Sits Above You
The goal moves from being clicked to being used. Our beginner’s guide to AEO covers the mechanics in full.
Be quotable
AI answers pull from sources that say things plainly. Long preambles, buried conclusions, and vague hedging all reduce your chances.
- Put the direct answer near the top of each section
- Keep headings descriptive
- Be specific about numbers, prices, timescales and conditions
Human readers benefit from the same changes, which makes this rare ground where both audiences want the same thing.
Get the technical groundwork right
A crawler that cannot access or parse your page cleanly will skip you regardless of how good the writing is. Structured data, clean heading hierarchy, fast loading and a sensible site structure all decide whether you make it into the pool of sources under consideration. Our SEO work covers this as standard, and on older sites it is usually where the quickest gains sit.
Be described consistently everywhere
AI systems build a picture of your business from your site, your listings, your profiles and third-party mentions. Conflicting details weaken it. One accurate description of what you do, where you work, and who you serve, repeated everywhere, makes you easier to quote with confidence.
Build genuine credibility
Past a certain point, being quoted depends on being trusted. Coverage in press your industry knows, mentions on relevant sites, and links earned through something worth writing about all feed that. Least fashionable part of search marketing, and one of the most durable.
Give cited pages somewhere to go
An AI answer cites a detailed guide, a visitor arrives with real intent, reads the paragraph they came for, then leaves. The page was built to inform and had no next step on it. Check which pages earn AI referrals and give each one somewhere obvious to go.
The Clicks You Do Get Are Worth More
Visitors arriving from AI assistants convert noticeably better than standard organic traffic. Adobe Digital Insights analysis, reported alongside wider zero-click research, found that:
- Retail visitors from AI assistants converted 42% better than non-AI traffic
- The same channel had converted around 38% worse twelve months earlier
- Those visitors spent longer on site, viewed more pages, and produced higher revenue per visit
Multipliers vary wildly across other studies depending on industry and how conversion gets defined, so hold the exact figures loosely. Every one of them points the same way.
An AI answer compresses research and shortlisting into one step. By the time someone clicks, they have read a summary, seen you named as a credible option, and decided you were worth a look. That beats a visitor landing on a general guide from position four.
Change What You Measure, Or You Will Reach The Wrong Verdict
Pull AI referrals out of the “direct” bucket
Visits from AI assistants often land under direct or other traffic unless someone sets the tracking up. Your best converting source ends up hidden inside a bucket nobody looks at. Fix that first, because you cannot argue for a channel you cannot see.
Put enquiries, calls and revenue at the top of the report
Traffic drops down the page and becomes context. We have always reported this way, and search has now made it the only sensible option. If a report opens with a traffic graph, ask what it is meant to tell you.
Keep an eye on branded searches
When people start searching your name directly, something upstream is working. Brand volume usually moves before referral traffic does, so it is often the earliest sign you are being mentioned in places you cannot see.
Compare impressions with clicks, query by query
The gap between the two shows you where answers are being lifted and where clicks are still on the table. One blended figure hides all of it.
Traffic down, enquiries steady, is a normal reading in 2026. Traffic down and enquiries down is a real problem. On an unsegmented chart, they look exactly the same.
What This Means For Budget
Content spend moves down the funnel: Posts written purely to catch informational traffic have a weak business case now. Content that helps someone compare, decide or buy has a stronger one.
Local visibility deserves more of the budget: It is the most resilient part of the results page and where enquiry intent concentrates. Our local SEO work sits there for that reason.
Paid search covers the gap: When organic clicks on research queries fall, Google Ads can hold immediate demand while organic visibility rebuilds. Fine as a deliberate call with numbers behind it. Expensive as a reflex.
SEO itself is not obsolete. Getting into the pool of sources an AI answer draws from still depends on ranking well, running a technically sound site and being credible. The work that gets you quoted is mostly the work that got you ranked. Only the way you judge it has changed.
Find Out What Is Actually Happening To Your Search Traffic
If your traffic has dropped over the past year and nobody has given you a clear explanation, we can give you one.
We will look at where your clicks have gone, which queries are still sending them, how your business appears in AI answers, and whether your enquiry volume has genuinely changed or just moved. Plain English, no jargon, and an honest view of what is worth doing next.

Frequently Asked Questions
A search that ends without anyone visiting a website. The answer sits on the search engine results page itself, through AI Overviews, a featured snippet, a knowledge panel or a map listing, so there is nothing left to click. Searches that simply lead to another search count too.
Yes. Search engine optimisation still decides whether you are in the pool of sources an AI answer draws from, because AI results are built on the same crawling, indexing and ranking machinery underneath. SEO is still the work. What has changed is that traffic volume is a poor way to judge whether it is paying off.
A ranking buys fewer clicks than it used to. When Google’s AI Overviews or another feature answers the query above your listing, your position in organic search holds while your click-through rate drops. This is the single most common question we are asked to explain at the moment.
Local, brand and transactional searches. Someone comparing suppliers, checking prices or looking for a business nearby still has a decision to make that a summary cannot make for them. Broad informational queries have taken the heaviest hit, which is why content built purely to catch them has lost value.
Answer the question directly and early on the page, be specific about numbers and conditions, keep your business described consistently across the web, and get the technical SEO right so crawlers can read you cleanly. Then build genuine credibility. If the terminology is confusing you, we have explained the difference between AEO, SEO and GEO. Nobody can promise a citation, and any agency guaranteeing AI visibility is overselling.
No, though it has changed what SEO practices look like day to day. Search engine algorithms and AI models weigh similar signals: relevance, clarity, technical health and credibility. Modern SEO adds attention to how content gets extracted and reused. The fundamentals that mattered five years ago still matter, which is why we take a basics first approach.
No, though the brief needs rewriting. Content chasing general informational search traffic has a weak business case now. Content that helps someone compare, decide or buy still earns its place, works as a citation source for AI driven search, and gives your sales conversations something to lean on.
It is part of the same shift. Voice assistants and AI powered search experiences both return one spoken or written answer instead of a page of options. Optimising content for a clear, direct response serves both, which is why we treat them as one job rather than separate projects.
Track enquiries, calls and revenue first, then use search data to explain them. Separate AI referrals so they stop hiding in direct traffic, watch branded search volume, and compare impressions against clicks by query type. Judging SEO efforts on sessions alone will give you the wrong verdict.
Fewer visitors, better qualified, and more emphasis on being quoted rather than clicked. The rise of AI powered search has been steady rather than sudden, and traditional search engines still send enormous commercial volume. Plan for a smaller share of clicks converting at a higher rate, and keep the fundamentals in good order.
